With Sun, Neil and Stacey outside the homestay |

Sunday was Bac Ha market day, which we were able to reach in a safe 20 minutes carried on our own two feet! I really enjoyed seeing the local women in their traditional brightly coloured clothes and it was another great opportunity to practise my photography. I bought a couple of locally crafted bags and scarves.

At Bac Ha Market |
The horse market was disturbing, as the horses were obviously distressed by the way they were handled. We also saw a man riding a horse which was doing the strangest gait I have ever seen - I think they pretty much ride wild horses here.
Despite fearing for our lives, the entire weekend was one of the best experiences of the trip so far and I would definitely like to return to Northern Vietnam to explore the region in more depth and next time with a more suitable mode of transport!

Distressing treatment of horses |
After this adventure, several nights of being woken up at 4am by squealing pigs and cockerels and another sleepless train ride home, I ended up ill for 4 or 5 days and spent some time watching movie channels in bed back in Hanoi. Those free bananas were almost all I ate for a while. I don't think Rachael will every be happy to ride a bus again (well maybe the number 1 from Werrington).
All in all, an interesting trip.
