Typical countryside home in Cambodia |
A 7 hour bus journey with 'Giant Ibis' took us from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. The bus was very new, they provided food and drinks and even a change of driver halfway through. All was well until the second driver took over, driving directly down the centre of the road at high speed and swerving out of the way of oncoming traffic at the last millisecond. After our Bac Ha experience, this was enough to
cement in our minds that there would be no bus journeys for us in Laos or Nepal...insane Asian driving would not combine well with their cliff edge roads.
Cambodia is almost entirely countryside. We passed a couple of tiny towns, but aside from that the farming population lives in stilted wooden houses. We were amazed at just how undeveloped it is. Most of the scenery was very marshy wetland.
The most impressive sight was a scooter being ridden by 5 adults and 2 kids (I barely believe this myself now, but at the time I know I did a double take and I even wrote it down!).
